Rhododendron and resin hollow form bowl

Project Type

Hollow form bowl

Wood

Rhododendron

In this unbelievable woodturning project, I show step by step, the process on how to make an incredible hollow form bowl casting with resin and wood and shaping using a woodturning lathe.

The wood is rhododendron, and a mold is made to combine red, orange, and yellow epoxy resin colours which were pre-cured before casting onto the wood so as the colours remain separated. The wood turning blank is sealed to protect against resin bleeding into the grain and the epoxy resin is cast onto the wood creating a hybrid blank then placed in a pressure pot.

Once cured the outside of the hybrid wood and resin blank is shaped on a wood turning lathe with traditional and carbide woodturning tools. The inside is drilled out and then hollowed with carbide tools.

The bowl is sanded and finished with sanding sealer and abrasive pastes before it is polished on a 3 stage buffing system with various abrasive compounds the final stage being carnauba wax for a deep gloss finish.
