Hornbeam Bowl - Coloured Finish.
Wood / Species: Hornbeam (Carpinus Betulus).
Hornbeam is a deciduous broadleaf tree which has pale grey bark with vertical markings. Mature trees can reach heights of 30 m and live for more than 300 years.
The common English name hornbeam derives from the hardness of the woods (likened to horn).
Finish:
After turning the outside of the bowl on a woodturning lathe the bowl is stained. Four colours were used and blended together before a sealer is applied to lock in the stain. Spray gloss lacquer is applied in many layers to build up the finish. After the lacquer is fully cured, abrasive pastes are used to enhance the finish.
The inside of the bowl is sanded then sealed to add a layer of protection to the bowl that bind the loose fibres and give a solid foundation. Abrasive pastes are used to de-nib the wood fibres and create a fine surface.
The bowl is lastly finished with a gloss finishing wax which is a combination of carnauba and microcrystalline wax. The wax is applied on the lathe and buffed to a high gloss quality finish.
The finish is a natural product and food safe, it's non-toxic and you can eat food that's contacted its surface.
Care:
This item is NOT dishwasher safe and CANNOT be used either in a microwave or conventional oven.
General cleaning advice is to wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately. Do NOT submerge in water or use hot water to clean, this will remove the finish.
The outside of the bowl can be simply wiped with a soft cloth and furniture polish if necessary.
If the inside finish becomes dull after prolonged use, restore with a coat of wax (I recommend Hampshire Sheen Gloss Finishing Wax).
