Beautiful large bowl handmade from English Yew with lots of character and featuring a unique combination of creamy sap wood in three places (2 at the side, and one in the base of the bowl, both sides) and a stunning purple streak running at the base of the bowl that is visible from the top and bottom of the bowl alongside a large knot. These features combined with the natural grain pattern found in Yew make this bowl quite unique, it can be used as a fruit bowl, salad bowl or simply display in pride of place.
This item is finished with cellulose sanding sealer, abrasive pastes and a gloss finishing wax to give a wonderfully smooth feel and deep long lasting shine.
The bowl measures 28 cm diameter x 8 cm tall.
Large Wooden Bowl Hand-Turned in English Yew
Wood / Species: Yew (Taxus Baccata)
Yew is one of the longest-lived native species in Europe and common in southern England and often forms the understorey in beech woodland. Yew is incredibly strong and durable making it ideal for wood turning while being careful to prevent inhalation of dust particles which are poisonous. Yew is historically important, finding use in the middle ages in items such as musical instrumnets, furniture and longbows.
Finish:
The wood after turning is sanded then sealed to add a layer of protection to bind the loose fibres and give a solid foundation. Abrasive pastes are used to de-nib the wood fibres and create a fine surface.
The piece is finished with a gloss finishing wax which is a combination of carnauba and microcrystalline wax. The wax is applied on the lathe and buffed to a high gloss quality finish.
The finish is a natural product and food safe, it's non-toxic and you can eat food that's contacted it’s surface.
Care:
This item is NOT dishwasher safe and CANNOT be used either in a microwave or conventional oven.
General cleaning advice is to wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately. Do NOT submerge in water or use hot water to clean, this will remove the finish.
If the finish becomes dull after prolonged use, restore with a coat of wax (I recommend Hampshire Sheen Gloss Finishing Wax).
